Oh those Russians

Given the recent publicity about Russia's anti-gay propaganda laws and protests against them, I did think that we may see some ongoing protests when the Sochi Winter Olympics began. Like several Australians, I can't really say the Winter Olympics was high on my viewing list last weekend, but I did manage to catch some of the Opening Ceremony on Friday Night/Saturday Morning.

I was sort of in and out of watching when something grabbed my attention. Tatu took the stage. Yes the band known for being marketed as teen lesbians arrived. Their performance was a little on the sedate side compared to what we're used to. Given the last live performance I remember was at the MTV Music Awards (on that occasion surrounded by 100 women dressed in school girl outfits slowly stripping down). But I suppose when you have a country in the world spotlight for archaic laws, it has to be hard. Especially when quite a few noteworthy Russians were gay. E.g. Composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and ballet performer Rudolf Nureyev. Hopefully sense will prevail sooner than later.

It turns out Russia should not be the only place under the spotlight for their anti-gay policies. Celebrity gossip Perez Hilton has written an article on 10 states in USA that currently have some sort of ban on promoting homosexuality.
